In the current versions of AIJ, comp stars can automatically be selected based on min and max peak counts, and relative number of counts compared to the T1 star. While this is not exactly SNR, it should do what you want. Just set min some factor above your background noise and max below the saturation limit. For variable searches it probably doesn't matter if an aperture is labelled a comp or target, but you can easily convert them after photometry is run if needed.
