Text box incompatibility with Mac OSX 10.13

Certain text boxes will not allow text to be entered directly from the keyboard. This is apparently an incompatibility between OSX 10.13 and java 6, which is used by AIJ. The affected text boxes are the ones in the generic AIJ panels such the aperture settings panel and the Multi-aperture setup panel. The sliders and checkboxes still work properly. The  fancier "Swing-based" panels such as DP and the Multi-plot panels are not affected.

There are currently two workarounds:

1) Open the Text Editor program and type the desired text into the the text editor window. Then copy and paste the text into the problematic AIJ text box.

2) Use the voice recognition feature of your Mac to enter the desired text.

We are working to implement a solution to this problem, but for now the inconvenient workarounds are required.

I noticed this note on the ImageJ message board this evening. Could an AIJ user running High Sierra try these updates to see if they fix the AIJ problems as well?

Hello Karen,

I also have discovered this problem with not being able to enter data in fields, specifically in apertures and in the Curve Fitting field.  I have not tried to find other locations.  I have just been getting by by typing what I want in notepad and then copying and pasting it into the field. That works in the meantime.

I am running MacOS 10.13.1 and have installed Apple Java6 2017-001, but I also upgraded to the latest Java after that.  I have also deleted and reinstalled AIJ as well as upgrade to the latest daily build.

I will keep trying various combinations.

Hi Willie,

I have seen the text field issue reported on the ImageJ forum as well. My understanding is that it is an interaction problem between Java and High Sierra, so I am hoping that Apple will provide a fix.

I have found a klugey work-around for the inability to enter data into fields in 10.13.

If you open Text Edit and type in the value that is desired, and copy that value, you can paste it into the data field over the old value, and it works fine.

It's awkward, but it works.

I haven't tried the work-around suggested above yet - will give them a try.

Mac OS X (High Sierra 10.13.4 Beta) and AstroImageJ (db3.2.1)

Besides the EXOPLANET Course uses, I have already found multiple uses for AstroImageJ in my Amateur Astronomy work, one being an asteroid / star occultation I'd recently measured in which the target star was inadvertently unresolved from a non-occulted binary twin.  Huge thanks to Karen Collins and the rest for an outstanding program.

Note for the developers (unknown if this is a symptom of my own computer / OS configuration):

I noted a repeatable abberent behavior for some text fields used to input some parameters in the software I want to pass on.  For these fields, keyboard-entered values are ignored, as if those fields are not allowing input.  However these fields do appear to get keyboard focus, and you can 'Cut and Paste' information into/out of them (Cmd C / Cmd V on Mac).  I suggest possibly that these text field parameters may not be optimally configured.

Some examples of Text Fields behaving in this manner are:

In 'Multi-Aperture Measurements'
       Radial profile mode normalized flux cutoff
In 'Aperture Photometry Settings'  [screen reached from the 'Aperture Settings' button]
       Keywords
       CCD gain
       CCD read out noise
In 'Set Vertical Marker Text'  [reached by clicking the button over the V Marker fields]
       Vertical Marker 1 Text - Line 1
       Vertical Marker 1 Text - Line 2
       Vertical Marker 2 Text - Line 1
       Vertical Marker 2 Text - Line 2

I'm also having difficulty inputting text into popup fields with the keyboard using AstroImageJ under MacOS 10.13.5.

It works with voice recognition, so you can speak the numbers in, but oh, how I miss the keyboard.  Any update on possible solutions/workaround?

Hi Mike,

I've been hoping this would get fixed on the Apple side, but I suppose that is not happening. This is my highest priority, but I have to find time for a solid debugging and coding time. I appreciate everyone's patience.

This issue is now fixed in the latest Mac installation package on the AIJ installation package website:
https://www.astro.louisville.edu/software/astroimagej/installation_packages

It is not possible to use the update feature to get the new version. A fresh install is required (your preferences will be maintained).
