AstroImageJ frequently quitting

ari.m.siqueira
Hello.

This is my first posting in this forum.

Quite often, AIJ crashes and I get an "AstroImageJ_quit_unexpectedly" report, which has happened with several AIJ releases. It happens in MacOS but not on Win 10 or Win 11.

I solve this by reinstalling AIJ.

Details:
AIJ 5.3.4.02 (but it also happened with AIJ's previous releases)
iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011)
macOS High Sierra v. 10.13.6, 32GB RAM

I have copied the log file below.

Please advise. Thank you.

Hi Ari,

Thank you for this report and detailed debug information. Does this happen the first time you use AIJ, or does it take a while for it to show up? If it takes a while, could you give us a rough estimate of how long (hours, days, weeks) after the install that it takes to show up?

Also, do you know if this happens with the version that is in the installation package used, or does it only show up after you have used the update feature to change to another version of AIJ?

In the meantime, we will be working to try to reproduce on our end.

Also, I assume you are using the AstroImageJv5.3.3.00-mac-x86_64Bit.dmg installation package (i.e. not the "arm" version), but please confirm.

Re: AstroImageJ frequently quitting

Hello, Karen,

It’s a pleasure to have your kind attention. I see you have multiple things going on in your career, but still find time to oversee the AIJ users group.

I earned a PhD in Cellular Biology at the University of Georgia in Athens (1988) and retired as an associate professor of Biochemistry at a Brazilian university in 2016. Since then, I have used most of my free time in amateur astronomy. Variable stars, mainly.

Now to the point:

Yes, I have been installing the mac-x86_64Bit version on my mid-2011 iMac, and the windows-x86_64Bit version on my Windows 10 and 11 machines.

Whenever I have to reinstall AIJ on my Mac (because it refused to start up, and the Mac issued the log file I sent you), I immediately upgrade it to the daily build, as per Dennis Conti’s instructions in his Advanced Use of AstroImageJ for Exoplanet Observing course that I took earlier this year. So, I didn’t ever try running AIJ without upgrading it to the daily build.

It takes a while for AIJ to refuse to start up, and it only does it to start up after running it a couple of times, which varies. So, it does not happen while I'm running/using it, but when starting it up. The next time it happens, I will reinstall it without upgrading it, to see what happens.

I will send you any additional information that I gather on the subject.

Best regards,

Ari

Thank you for the additional information. I have not been able to reproduce yet at this point, but my Mac is running macOS Sonoma 14.5. I do not have any way to test with the older macOS 10.X. Is it that you are unable to update your macOS for other reasons? If so, we may have to get creative about debugging based on information you can provide (although we're not sure what to ask for yet).

Re: AstroImageJ frequently quitting

Thank you for reaching out again.

Actually, the “issue" I reported does not create any problem. I just took the initiative to let you know it happens, but that’s no big deal for what it concerns me. I also have AIJ in two Windows machines, which serve me well. And AIJ runs normally on my Mac after it gets started. When it doesn’t start, I reinstall it, no fuss.

I cannot upgrade beyond macOS High Sierra v. 10.13.6 because my Mac is too old and no longer accepts the recent system software versions, just like an old iPhone.

If and when I have more news, I’ll let you know.

Cheers,

Ari
