Hi everyone! I'm currently having an issue with the alignment using apertures function; I haven't used AIJ in a while, and this time around the alignment worked with the first couple of image sequences I aligned, but since then every time I try to align I run into the same issue: after placing the apertures, I hit "enter" but the alignment doesn't actually happen. The alignment help window that describes all the commands updates so that the only functions it describes are the ones you use to move the image/zoom in or out, but no aligned stack is created. I was wondering if anyone else has run into this issue/knows how to fix it? Thank you so much for your time!

Could you share more about your set up. A screen shot of the
alignment set-up panel, and whether or not you are using a virtual
stack, along with the version of AIJ you are running, and version of
OS would be helpful. Also, make sure the apertures you are using for
alignment are large enough that they don't lose the intended star
from image to image.

My AIJ version is 3.2.0, and I'm running Windows 10 Home on a PC laptop. I've attached images of the alignment set up window, as well as the help window after I click "place apertures" both before and after I hit enter. The alignment worked the first couple of times I tried it, but after that it just updates the help window but doesn't do anything else when I hit enter. I've tried both "use previous apertures" and placing the apertures again, both with the same results. I open the images using the import sequence feature, and I pull them off of an external hard drive; however, I think I remember having this issue the last time I used AIJ when I saved images on my computer, I just don't remember what I did to fix it.
Thank you so much for your help! |

Hi Kylie,
I am unable to see your aperture size of 5 pixels relative to the size of the PSF in your images, but 5 pixels generally seems small. Have you tried a larger aperture size? If it fails to centroid on a star, maybe the sequence is hanging. Do you for sure have write access to the external drive folder that contains your images? You will of course need write access if you are using a virtual stack so that the aligned stack can be rwritten to a sub-folder. I have heard in some odd cases that file reading and writing from external USB hard drives has caused problems, although I have not been able to reproduce the problem. If neither of the above solves the problem, try copying your original images to your main hard drive and see if the problem is resolved. Is your java installation 32-bit or 64-bit? You can click on the lower portion of the AIJ Toolbar and then copy a screen grab of the tool bar and include in your response. That will give the info we need. It's a long shot, but try updating to the latest daily build following this post: http://astroimagej.1065399.n5.nabble.com/After-a-fresh-installation-of-AIJ-be-sure-to-update-to-the-latest-build-td142.html Please report back here if your problem is resolved, and if so, which step corrected the problem. If not fixed, let us know that too and we'll need to dig deeper. Karen

Updating the program worked! However, it did bring up another issue; it seems like I'm no longer able to open as many images at once as I used to be able to because of the memory limit. I tried increasing the memory limit using the edit>options>memory&threads function (while running AIJ as an administrator) but got an error message including the phrase "AstroImageJ.cfg not found." I'm not sure what this means exactly or how to fix it?
Thank you for all your help so far! Update: never mind! I did some more research and re-installed AIJ in my documents folder this time, and that seemed to work. Thank you again! |

Hi Kylie,
Windows 10 locked down the "Programs Files" folder and made it write protected. AIJ needs to be able to write the AstroImageJ.cfg file to the installation directory when you change the memory setting. Apparently the current AIJ installation directory is write protected. It may be easier to install AIJ into a write-enabled directory, such as the Documents folder. Karen On 2/11/2021 6:58 PM, KylieH [via
